CHARTER DAY SEPTEMBER 8, 2024
The Birmingham Metropolitan Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was officially chartered on September 8, 2024, on the historic campus of Miles College with 60 visionary charter members. This milestone marked the beginning of a new and impactful journey in the Birmingham area, continuing the legacy of NCNW’s founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, who established the national organization in 1935.
From the start, our section has embraced NCNW’s mission as an “organization of organizations”—a powerful network dedicated to advocating for women of African descent, their families, and their communities. We stand on the shoulders of trailblazers who devoted their lives to education, economic empowerment, health equity, and social justice.
Since chartering, we have brought together women from diverse backgrounds to lead initiatives that inform, uplift, and empower. Whether through health summits, voter engagement, educational programs, or community service, our section strives to be a catalyst for meaningful change in Birmingham and beyond.
We partner with local nonprofits, faith groups, schools, and health providers to promote wellness, education, economic empowerment, and social justice. These collaborations help us expand our reach and create lasting impact in the Birmingham community.
Our goal is to grow membership, strengthen community programs, and build lasting partnerships in Birmingham. In the next 5–10 years, we see our section as a leading voice for women, families, and communities, and expanding our impact in education, health, economic empowerment, and social justice.
